Group B Streptococcus testing at Miracle in Progress

What is Group B Streptococcus (GBS)?

Group B Streptococcus is the commonest cause of bacterial infection in newborn babies in the UK.

Most pregnant women who carry group B streptococcus (GBS) bacteria have healthy babies. However, there’s a small risk that GBS can pass to the baby during childbirth.

Did you know, up to nine out of ten pregnant women have ‘never heard’ about Group B Strep bacteria?

If a baby develops a GBS infection, it has more likely been exposed to GBS in the womb  – this can only happen during labour, birth, or after birth. Approximately 25% of women of childbearing age carry GBS in the vaginal-rectal area at any one time. Many thousands of babies are exposed to GBS with no ill effects – it isn’t clear why some babies are susceptible to the bacteria and develop an infection.

Sometimes GBS infection in newborn babies can cause serious complications that can be life-threatening, but this is not common. Group B Strep is usually preventable with antibiotic treatment for the mother during labour.

Miracle in Progress offers group B streptococcus testing to all pregnant women between 35-37 weeks of pregnancy
