The benefits of antenatal classes
It can be a bit of a daunting experience attending your first antenatal class as a first-time mum. However, once you get past the initial butterflies they can be really beneficial providing a wealth of support and useful information.
You’ll get a chance to meet new people
Meeting people going on the same journey as you is reassuring. Whilst your friends and work colleagues might be incredibly supportive, unless they have been through it themselves, they may not fully understand. Your pregnant classmates, on the other hand, will know exactly what the deal is and be able to offer their input, advice and support.
You’ll learn about looking after your baby
Let’s be frank, the thought of being responsible for a tiny human being is terrifying, especially if you’re a first-time mum. But fear not, the information you will learn in these classes will help to ease your mind, with teaching you the ins and outs of looking after a new-born.
You’ll be able to get your partner involved
Your partner will be able to go through your journey with you, at least in some form, at antenatal classes. They can be taught things like helping you regulate your breathing and how to help you cope with pain.
They can give you insights into health during pregnancy
You’ll be able to learn about proper nutrition during your pregnancy, as well as how to spot the early signs of any complications. You’ll also be able to able to discuss issues like breastfeeding and of course our birthing options.
They’ll help prepare you for labour
Antenatal classes will help prepare you for the pressures both (physical and mental) of labour. You will be shown exactly what happens and how you can prepare yourself for it. The classes will also be useful for discussing your pain relief options.
